Scan Items Over Start New Order

Updated

Overview

Use the Scan Items Over Start New Order setting to keep the Scan Items button visible on terminals that scan barcodes.

On the POS order screen there is one shared spot in the bottom button bar that can hold either the Scan Items button or the Start New Order button. When Show New Order Button is turned on, the Start New Order button normally takes that spot.

On terminals that scan barcodes, this can push the Scan Items button out of view. The Scan Items Over Start New Order setting lets you tell those terminals to keep the Scan Items button in the shared spot instead.

This is a store-wide (system) setting, so it applies to every terminal in the location.

How to Use

  1. In the back office, open Settings → Servers, Tables and Staff.
  2. Find Scan Items Over Start New Order under General Settings.
  3. Choose:
    • On – terminals with barcode scanning enabled keep the Scan Items button in the shared spot.
    • Off – the Start New Order button keeps the shared spot when it is turned on (the standard behavior).
  4. Save the settings page.
  5. The change takes effect the next time each terminal loads the order screen.

Limitations

  • Applies wherever the two buttons would otherwise compete for the same spot: the terminal must have barcode scanning turned on, and Show New Order Button must be on for Start New Order to want the spot. This includes terminals with no Order Start method.
  • The setting is store-wide. It is not set per terminal.
  • It controls only which of the two buttons occupies the shared spot; it does not add a second spot for both to appear at once.
  • Leaving barcode scanning off means there is no Scan Items button to show, so the setting has no visible effect.

FAQ

We turned it On but nothing changed on one terminal. Confirm that terminal has barcode scanning enabled, then reload the order screen so the change is picked up. The setting only has a visible effect where both buttons would want the shared spot, so also check that Show New Order Button is on.

Do I still need the Start New Order button setting? Yes. Show New Order Button still controls whether Start New Order appears at all. This setting only decides who wins the shared spot when both would otherwise want it on a scanning terminal.

Will this affect terminals that are not used for scanning? No. With barcode scanning off, the setting has no visible effect on that terminal.

Does it matter whether the terminal starts an order automatically? No. The shared spot is decided the same way on every terminal, whether or not an Order Start method is set.
