Receipt Template Designer
Overview
The Receipt Template Designer lets you build the printable receipts that come out of your kitchen, register, and customer-facing printers, and assign each one to a specific Order Method (Takeout, Delivery, Bar, etc.) and Receipt Type (Kitchen, Register, Customer).
You can design as many templates as you want.
The designer is a live, drag-and-drop editor with a real-time preview that shows what your receipt will actually look like at the paper width you choose.
How to Use
Open the designer
- From the Back Office, go to Printing & Receipts > Receipt Templates.
- The Receipt Templates page shows two sections:
- Template Assignments at the top - which template prints for each Order Method / Receipt Type combination.
- Receipt Templates below - the list of all templates you have built. Use the search box or the filter chips to find one quickly.
Create a new template
- Click New Receipt Template in the top-right of the Receipt Templates section.
- The full-page editor opens.
- Give your template a Name, choose a Paper Width (28, 32, 33, 40, 42, or 48 characters - match this to your physical paper), and pick a Totals Template if you want a specific one.
- In the preview pane on the left, click Add row under Header or Footer to add a new line. Pick a layout:
- Centered - one centered item
- Left aligned / Right aligned - one left or right item
- Left / Right split - two items, one on each side of the line (great for "Subtotal . . . $9.99")
- 2 / 3 / 4 columns - multiple items side by side
- Blank line - an empty line
- Divider line --- - a row of dashes that fills the width
- Click any item (the yellow
[SET]placeholders pulse until you set them) to select it. The right-hand Selected panel lets you:- Pick the Type (Order Method, Customer Name, Date, Custom Text, etc.) - types are grouped by category and searchable.
- Edit the Static label (a prefix like "Order #:" that appears before the value).
- Type your own Custom text if the type is Custom Text.
- Pick a Divider character for Character Line rows.
- Choose Bold, Underline, Color (black or red), and Size (standard, double height, double width, or both).
- Reorder rows by grabbing the dotted handle on the left and dragging. You can drag rows between Header and Footer.
- Click Save in the top-right when you're done.
Edit, clone, or delete
- Each card on the list view has Edit, Clone, and Delete buttons.
- Cloning makes a copy named
Original (Copy)so you can tweak without losing the original. - You can only delete a template that no receipt uses. If it is still chosen in the Template Assignments grid, the page lists where it is used (for example, "Takeout - Credit Ticket") and keeps the template. Choose another template for each of those first, then delete it.
- When a template can be deleted, the page asks you to confirm, then says that it was deleted.
Assign templates
Use the Template Assignments grid: pick the template that should print for each Order Method / Receipt Type combination. Choose None to leave that combination unassigned.
Each choice saves as soon as you make it. The box shows Saving..., then Saved. If it shows Not saved, the box goes back to the template that is still in use; try the change again, or reload the page.
Keyboard shortcuts
- Delete - remove the selected row
- Ctrl + D (Cmd + D on Mac) - duplicate the selected row
- Esc - clear selection
Limitations
- One color per row. Thermal printers can only print one color per line, so changing the color on one item changes the color of every item in that row. This is enforced by the designer.
- Body section is not editable. The line items and modifiers in the middle of every receipt are generated by the POS at print time based on the order. The totals block follows the Totals Template you pick for the receipt template (or the default totals layout when it is set to Default). Only the Header and Footer are designed here.
- Paper width matters. A template designed at 48 characters wide will not lay out as designed on a 32-character printer. Match the width to your hardware.
[SET]items block save. Any unconfigured placeholder must be either configured (pick a Type) or removed before you can save.- Permission required. You need access to the Receipt Templates page in the Back Office. Ask an administrator if you don't see it.
FAQ
Why don't I see my new template in the assignments grid? Save the template first. Once it's saved, it shows up in every dropdown in the assignments grid.
Why can't I delete a template? It is still chosen for at least one Order Method / Receipt Type. The page lists each one. Pick another template for them in the Template Assignments grid, then delete it. If a listed combination says it is not shown on this page for your business type, contact support to have it changed.
Can I have a different template for delivery vs. takeout? Yes - that's exactly what the assignments grid is for. You can map any combination of Order Method and Receipt Type to a different template.
My logo / restaurant name is in a header that prints from the printer itself - do I need to add it here? No, you do not need to add a header that the printer prints by itself. The Receipt Header Text item type is something different: it inserts the receipt header text that is set for the register. Add it only if you want that text on this receipt. After you change a template, print a test receipt to make sure that nothing prints twice.
What does "Character Line" do?
It repeats whatever character you pick (*, -, =, or .) across the full paper width. Useful as a section divider.
What does "Blank Line" do? Inserts an empty line - handy for spacing.
My receipt cuts off characters on the right. Drop the Paper Width to match your printer. An 80 mm thermal printer usually prints 42 or 48 characters per line, and a 58 mm printer usually prints about 32.
Can I add my own item type that isn't in the list? Use Custom Text for any fixed text. Dynamic item types (order info, totals, etc.) are managed by the POS - if you need a new dynamic type, contact support.
The font size 2xH / 2xW shows differently on screen vs. on paper. The preview is an approximation. Test-print to confirm exact spacing on your specific printer.
